Sometimes, we can get in a ‘funk’. A mood of day when we just feel like doing nothing, we’re angry, irritable and just generally in a shit place. It happens. And it’s important to accept this and not beat yourself up. However, there are things we can do to try and shift this mood and ‘funk’ and still make the most of our day and not let it consume us.
I’m going to share some tips on what I would do to escape this funk-
- Go for a walk – you can walk anywhere, but it might be a good idea to do one of your favourite walks – like a beautiful view, or a house that you like to look at etc
- Have a dance party – this is not what you think! Simply put on some upbeat music that gets you pumped and you can dance to and either dance alone wherever you can or grab a family member or friend to do it with you (I scream ‘dance party’ at my sister and she knows exactly what to do) – do this for as long as it takes to lift your mood
- Immerse yourself in a book – whether it be fiction or non fiction – distract yourself even if only for 10 minutes – it will help you forget you’re in a funk
- Have a quick shower – make sure you turn it to cold at end – start off with 15 seconds and build your way up to a few minutes
- Do some physical activity – this could be going to the gym, running, playing a sport, yoga – anything that you like – just get your body moving and your mind focused on the physical activity rather than the fact you’re in a ‘funk’
- Call/see a friend – sometimes even a 2 minute call with someone can just help yo switch your mindset – you may pick up on their good mood, or they may be able to help or at least listen, even just hearing the voice of/seeing someone you love and care about can boost your mood and make you forget all your worries
- Be productive – make yourself a to do list – even if it’s just a small one – this will give you a sense of accomplishment and distract you from your ‘funk’
- Do an activity you enjoy (bowling, cinema, museum, art gallery, shopping, food etc)
- Go for a drive – similar to the walk – go somewhere you like driving – even if only for 5-10 mins
- Lift your arms up – have a shake around – stand proud (superman pose) – remind yourself you hold the power – you get to decide how your day goes
- Listen to a fave podcast / watch your fave film or show – try not to let this take up your whole day or let you get into more of a funk of not doing anything though – be wise
- Change your outfit, do your hair or makeup – remind yourself of the bad bitch that you are
- Do some self care or house care – reset yourself including your space – change your bedding, hoover, do a face mask or teeth whitening
