Life is short and there is no time to waste being afraid. Whether it’s being afraid of speaking up to someone, to saying how you feel, to taking a trip, moving country for a job, meeting new people, getting a new haircut, starting a business, cutting off old ties. The list is literally endless.
Now fear is normal and something we all experience on some level, however you must overcome letting it consume you and dictate how you live your life. You must be fearful and afraid and do it anyway. This will teach you that you do not need to be fearful and that you are capable.
Let me just make the point that I’m talking about RATIONAL fears here like being afraid of being eaten by a shark or a crocodile. Many fears are justified and we simply live with them in the back of our minds – knowing that in a moment where we were faced with this fear we would go into fight or flight mode. The issue is that the world has adapted greatly. Unlike our ancestors, we typically don’t have to worry about being chased by a lion or a bear or fighting for food. However, our bodies have not adapted in the same way, which means that for many of us, we go into fight or flight mode in situations where it isn’t actually needed or useful. This is one explanation for anxiety.
It can be incredibly hard to tackle your fears, and I am not stating that this is any easy task. However, the sooner you start tackling those fears, the freer you will be, the happier you will be and you are bound to experience more amazing things.
So no matter how afraid you are – do it anyway! (Excluding some specific things – aka trying to fight a shark – PLEASE DO NOT DO THAT!!!). Reach out to that person, have that awkward conversation with a partner, go out alone, go somewhere new, try something new.
BE BOLD AND BE BRAVE.
